Why do worldly passions fade and disappear from view? Why is there no contentment in the things of this world? Why can’t you ever have enough, but always need more? These are the questions of the ages, they have been asked by philosophers, billionaires, and even saints. Men have trouble finding contentment, even among love and marriage there is a lack of fulfillment without something bigger or greater to live for. Men and women have tried virtues, peace, love, hope, honor, and valor, however even these are not self-fulfilling. The question is then what could possibly be so glorious and self-fulfilled that we could find contentment in it? The answer is, very practically, God and I’ll show you why.
The Bible is the center of my faith, Christianity, if you believe the Bible to be one hundred percent truth as I do, you’ll be amazed to see why we can find contentment in him. First off, we must ask, is God glorious? For the things of this world hold glory, and that is what draws us to them in the first place. Looking at Exodus 15:11 we see that it is written, “Who among the gods is like you? Who is like you— majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?” Awesome in glory, this establishes that God is in fact glorious, and that he is above all other gods. However, some of you are still confused, how does this help us find contentment in him if he’s just like the things of this world? I’m getting there.
The key of God is not that he is glorious, but that he is the MOST GLORIOUS. 1 Chronicles 16:24-25 says “Declare his glory among the nations his marvelous deeds among all the peoples. For great is the Lord and MOST worthy of praise, he is to feared above all gods.” This is a blatant statement saying that he is the most worthy of praise, therefore the most glorious. Not only is the most glorious but in Acts he is stated as the “God of Glory”. But what does this mean that he is the most glorious?
I was reading the book Desiring God by Piper and he does a wonderful job of explaining it. “The chief end of God is to glorify God and enjoy himself forever… If none of his purposes can be frustrated, then He must be the happiest of all beings. This infinite, divine happiness is the fountain from which the Christian Hedonist drinks and longs to drink more deeply.” The desire to find contentment and happiness in his spring of glory is what the Christian lives and breath, or at least tried to. Now that you understand that God is all glorious, and that we can find our contentment in him, what does it mean for us?
Throughout the New Testament we see the repeated command to glorify him, and share his glory with the entire world. In 1 Corinthians 10:31 the command is, “Do it all for the glory of God.” There you go. We are commanded to increase his glory, and to find contentment in it. In Collosians 3:17 we hear the latter message, “Whatever you do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord.” We are all called to find contentment in his glory, and to spread and share it with joy. The call of a Christian is not an easy one, but I exhort those of you who are trying to share his glory, for I know that you will greatly rewarded in heaven. Matthew 6:19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.”
God Bless.
