The candle’s tear sidled down the pewter candlestick, moving to the sound of the scratching. “Tch, Tch… Tch, Tch.” The ball of wax wound its way down, slithering like a snake to the sound of a flute. The man shuddered at the disturbance, rolling on to his side. A raven cawed nearby as the window flew open. A chain rattled somewhere far below as someone moaned.
The man grimaced, rising and disturbing the bedside table, causing the ink to spill and the heavy quill pen to clatter as it hit the floor. The man ignored the spill, heading for the window. A rat scurried on the wall, but the moaning had ceased. “I could have sworn…” The man shook his head wearily, the echoing of chains still haunting him from his dreams. As the man glanced around, he realized that the chains were far more real. He looked up and saw it hanging from the ceiling. Mangled within, was some kind of fabric. The man reached it, untangling it and finding in his hands a glove. The velvet glove had lacy jeweled patterns on the outside in the shape of a raven. “No! No! It couldn’t be hers!” The ornate pattern was unmistakable. “Why! Why cruel fates? Why!”
